You, dear reader, will quickly find that I can be mercurial in my thoughts from day to day. I’m still lusting over bags and storage solutions of course, but I had a realization today. What the Apple iPad has done to me. I was just grousing about Macs as I pulled out my ThinkPad at work (considering the move from my MacBook Pro as primary laptop to the Lenovo) and how the iPhone is a crummy phone next to my Nexus One and I realized I don’t really like Apple anymore. I thought I could track it back to some nebulous date last summer, maybe when they said no to Google Voice and Google Latitude because it would cut into their relationships with other companies, or it would create competition to anything they might try to bring onto the iPhone. That irritated me, for sure. Maybe it was this November when my wife complained that her 1 yr old iPhone (a xmas present from me last year) didn’t always track right on the touch screen, I thought we could take it in but apparently she perspired on the phone in the right place and its considered a wet phone and thus warranty voided. But isn’t it either.

No, what happened, that day that I flipped over to hear the iPad announcement (yes, I cared enough to even watch the liveblogs) was that I gave up on Apple. The new device, in general, is a big “meh” for me but then how its being positioned makes it an affront to everything I believe in. Closed device, you can’t connect anything to it (unless its Apple approved and goes through their single I/O port) and you have to get any software from the internets or the Apple Store. Those two things irritated me, but then they announced their new Apple book store. Here is what continues to get to me about Apple, they create devices dependant on THEIR stores and their DRM media, you’re not doing much on your iPod without iTunes, you’re not doing much on the iPhone with the App Store, and you won’t read much on the iPad without the iBookStore.

Apple is locking everything around them, forcing you to do everything their way, and its closing down innovation for everyone else. Or rather, if you innovate, do it on your own dime. Do it with your own everything else. They, rather than Microsoft, are turning into the Anti-thesis of Google (whom I probably love too much.) I now have Microsoft AND Apple to fill my mouth with bile at their products. Great… I’m getting old and cranky.

To be fair, I still like my MacBook Pro, it is MUCH better than any Windows based laptop I’ve seen for ease of use and general ease of use. But it breaks, I’ve been through 3 of them in the last 3 years, they over heat, they bog down, they’re far from perfect. To be even more out of character, I’m scared of Chrome OS as it is a new OS that no games will play on and no apps will install on. Maybe in 5 years, maybe 10, we’ll see enough high quality cloud based apps that its exciting but for now I’m likely to stick with Apple for my laptops and Google for my Phones. At least I feel I can trust the Google Phones to move along and the MacBook Pro is as open as I need… for now. *sigh*

I have a confession, its about my lust for gear. I spend too much money on quality bags (backpack or messenger) and then try to find ways to organize my stuff in them. I do the same for multi-purpose gadgets, journal, and pens. Luckily for my wallet, I balk at some more extravagant purchases but the lust is there. I can spend hours going through Flickr pools like these:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/whats_in_your_bag/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/moleskinerie/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/71332759@N00/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/mymole/

And this isn’t getting into my Desktop, computer lust.

I came across a great post today that shows my nirvana, an “Every Day Carry” bag that has pretty much everything I’d be carrying had I started sooner and done the homework that he’s done. The Things I Carry just needs a shopping list to those important gizmos and I’ll click. (c: Of course his sexy colored pencil set doesn’t appear to be online, though I found an alternative (thats currently out of stock.) I’m poised to purchase but still wonder, why do I need colored pencils?

My short list of things to buy?

Muji Travel Organizer – This is small and will easily toss into my backpack or messenger bag. Finally I can convince myself to use the Messenger more frequently.

A&P Key Ring – Yay, I can make it myself!

MiniStaff Colored Pencils – 12 pencils, a sharpner and an eraser, all in a little pack about the size of a business card! (Whats not to love?)

Pico Pen – A tiny little pen that fits on your key ring (see above.) I’m constantly finding myself without. I’m 0 for 2 in the Space Pen battle, I need one that will be hard to lose.

I’ll proceed to snap some pictures of my gear as I hope to build out the sets, I’m giddy with these new finds though. Thank you internets.

I’m trying this new approach to Yoga, rather than watching videos (which technically I still do) I’m actually taking control of the “workout” and doing it at my own pace. They just frustrate me when they tell me to breathe in, especially when they say to do it twice in a row (I’m looking at you Rodney Yee) and confuse me enough that I get all out of sync. I’m starting with a simple Sun Salutation (I’ve managed to get the whole family in on my efforts each evening so far, thats a great thing!) and then move towards holding poses longer or adding in some other more challenging moves. In the long run I’m not sure where I’ll go with it, I just found out that this is more of a Hatha Yoga thing but I think I’m probably more of an Ashtanga Vinyasa kind of guy. I did find some great posts with animations and the like but the gist of a Sun Salutation is this:

Mountain Pose (?) – Standing upright.

Bring arms over head – as I tell the kids while we’re doing it, “Point at the moon!”

Forward bend - “Touch your toes!”

Step right foot back to a lunge – try to touch your heel to the floor, lift your head to look in front of you.

Left Foot back to plank pose – “Stiff like a board!”

Push Up Position – Basically we’ve just done half of a pushup.

Upward dog – try to look up at the moon!

Push back to downward dog – lift your butt, heels on the floor, spread your toes, soften your face (this is the bread and butter of yoga for me so far)

Right foot forward to a lunge – see above.

Forward Bend

Up to Mountain pose.

As I lead these family yoga sessions I try to emphasize slowness right now, breathing if I think of it or I’m talking to my wife. I’ll do it a couple of times which is a decent de-stresser. I’m not sure it will have the same impact of doing 20 pushups mid-day to wake myself up currently has but I might try it. The pushup trick is great though.

Thats my little bit of fitness talk today, the real fun is in the DIY/House Projects i’m still glowing from… thats a different post.

I have many ideas I need to dump and debate on using a unique new blog URL or this old favorite, for now I’ll just put thoughts here.
